Moral Superpower of the World? – TEASA at the First International Global Anti-Apartheid Conference for Palestine

South Africa hosted the historic Global Anti-Apartheid Conference for Palestine at the Sandton International Convention Centre, in Johannesburg, from the 10th to the 12th of May 2024.

It signaled a moment where the people of the world, in their civil society formations, called for a ceasefire in Israel’s war on Gaza, in particular, and an end to Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian territories, in general. This call will be accompanied by a concerted non-violent action, to persuade Israel to abandon apartheid.

This initiative by civil society is similar to the Anti-Apartheid movement that helped to end Apartheid in South Africa. Read the Declaration here: Global AntiApartheid Declaration on Palestine

Formerly colonised people from around the world, have called South Africa “the moral superpower” of the world. Firstly, because it dared to take Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to adjudicate between Israel and Palestine. Secondly, because South African Civil Society – not government – convened the first Global Anti-Apartheid Conference on Palestine.

This flows naturally from the colonial and apartheid experience of South Africans. Put differently, it could very well be that the miracle of 1994 gave the nation a sense of mission and vocation in the world, to testify of what the Lord has done in South Africa.
