TEASA STATEMENT ABOUT ANC TSHWANE CHAIR STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF PROPHET SHEPHERD BUSHIRI

8 Feb 2019

The Evangelical Alliance has noted the comments made by ANC Tshwane Chair Dr Kgosi Maepa after the bail hearing of Prophet Shepherd Bushiri outside the Pretoria High Court. We wish to register our displeasure for the ANC to publicly pledge support for someone who is now formally accused of serious charges on money laundering, fraud and corruption.

Our country has a high incidences of corruption and it is a serious threat to our country’s democracy and its fight again poverty, inequality and unemployment. Corruption has robbed our country of so many opportunities for progress and development in the last many years. It is expected that all stakeholders in society should be unambiguous in stance on corruption. Thus we are finding it disheartening for the ruling party to continue to pledge support for individuals and leaders accused of acts of corruption.

In the religious space there have been reported acts of abuse of religion in the last few years. Prophet Bushiri is one of the religious leaders who is accused of abusing ordinary and vulnerable people by promising instant miracles and quick money making. Thus we find it deplorable for the ruling party to associate itself with such characters.

Thus we are calling on the ANC to dissociate itself from the support statements attributable to ANC Tshwane Chair Dr Kgosi Maepa.
