TEASA Historical Timeline
Since its founding, TEASA has played a pivotal role in uniting evangelicals, advocating for justice, and responding to the evolving challenges faced by faith communities in South Africa. Rooted in a commitment to biblical integrity, social transformation, and evangelism, TEASA has navigated key historical moments that have shaped both the church and the nation.
From its early days in racially divided South Africa to its active engagement in reconciliation, social justice, and leadership development, TEASA has remained a steadfast voice for unity and faith in action. This timeline highlights some of the key milestones in TEASA’s journey, showcasing how the organisation has contributed to the spiritual, social, and ethical fabric of South African society.

The Evangelical Fellowship of South Africa (EFSA) was established to unite evangelical Christians across racial and denominational lines. This was a foundational step toward building a collective evangelical voice in South Africa.
In response to racial divisions within the evangelical movement, black evangelicals broke away from the EFSA and formed Concerned Evangelicals (CE). This movement emerged to address the lack of representation and ensure that black evangelicals had a voice in shaping the faith community.
With the end of apartheid, South Africa held its first democratic elections, setting the stage for a new era of reconciliation. This milestone provided evangelicals with a critical opportunity to move beyond historical divisions and work toward racial unity and justice.
Recognising the urgent need for unity, black and white evangelical church leaders came together to establish TEASA (The Evangelical Alliance of South Africa). This marked a turning point in fostering greater cooperation among evangelicals to address national and faith-based challenges.
TEASA actively participated in the post-apartheid reconciliation process by making a formal submission to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). This initiative reinforced the role of evangelicals in promoting truth, justice, and healing.
In response to the HIV & AIDS pandemic, TEASA hosted a major regional conference that brought together evangelical alliances from across the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The conference focused on mobilising faith communities to address the crisis.
To align with the Millennium Development Goals, TEASA launched Micah South Africa, an initiative aimed at advocating for poverty alleviation, social justice, and sustainable development from a Christian perspective.
TEASA co-hosted the Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelisation, a landmark gathering of over 4,000 Christian leaders from 198 countries. The event reinforced global partnerships in evangelism and mission work.
In partnership with the South African Council of Churches, African Enterprise, and other faith-based organisations, TEASA co-founded SACLI (South African Christian Leadership Initiative). This platform was established to provide strategic leadership in addressing national issues.
TEASA played a critical role in forging alliances with other organisations to confront State Capture, a widespread corruption crisis in South Africa. The organisation stood firm in advocating for justice, accountability, and ethical governance.
TEASA, alongside other evangelical movements, launched the Decade of Evangelism, a national campaign aimed at revitalising the church’s role in mission work, outreach, and faith-based transformation.
